Samurai Blue is horrible, as is Cafe Japon. Try SoHo Sushi, Yoko, Water (interesting to say the least) or even, quite surprisingly, The Rack.

Goose: thanks for the sushi ideas. happy new year!

Ichiban on Fowler just west of Bruce B Downs, in the same strip mall as Sweetbay (and Five Guys Burgers & Fries).

The two friends who introduced me to it have eaten at countless sushi places in town, as well as several places in Japan, and they love Ichiban. I've only been a couple of times but have had a great meal each time.

Forgot - Pacific Wave in St. Pete is not primarily a sushi restaurant, but the chef makes a simple but terrific sushi plate.

Just avoid dollar sushi night (Thursday, I believe) - the crowds are insane and the sushi isn't as fresh, no surprise since it's the end of the week.

Joel: Thanks for the Ichiban idea and I do have Five Guys on my list now - just trying t be healthier for at least a few days :)

I spend a fair amount of time in downtown St Pete and always hear good things about Pacific Wave- guess I've gotta try it one of these days. Thanks again and happy new year-

Tried Sakana on Gandy last night. Apparetnly it's the same guy that used to run sushi on 7th in Ybor. Thought it was outstanding.

Kaiko Japanese Restaurant in Clearwater is great but can get extremely busy on Friday and Saturday nights, resulting in a ridiculously long wait time both to sit down and to get the meal. The fish is always fresh, little rice on all rolls, and the sashimi is sliced just perfect because it's so thin. This place has the freshest sushi I"ve ever tasted.

Another favorite spot is Osaka on Madeira beach or Sushi Spot in Largo (same owners). The sexyman roll is to die for! Lots of sauce on special rolls makes you want to go back for more!!

matt

lisa, thanks for the pinellas sushi ideas.

samurai blue was a definite disappointment and sushi rock in st. pete was good, but not great IMO.
